Guidelines and Instructions

Guidelines

  1. The student intends to pursue a career in the teaching of mathematics.  She/he will attend a four-year private or state supported college/university in Virginia.
  2. High school transcripts, letters of recommendation, honors and awards, school and community activities, test scores, and written expression will be considered in the selection process.  Finalists may be invited to a personal interview with a committee of members of the Blue Ridge Council of Teachers of Mathematics.
  3. The scholarship grant will be sent directly to the college/university indicated by the recipient to offset tuition and related costs.
  4. The student must maintain a 3.0 (4.0 scale) overall GPA and a 2.8 average in all mathematics courses.
  5. The scholarship may be renewed for up to four consecutive years, provided that the student remains in good academic standing and is making progress toward licensure in mathematics education.  It is the responsibility of the studnet to contact BRCTM each year to renew the scholarship.

Instructions

  1. Complete the online Student Application.
  2. Send an email indicating your intent to apply for the scholarship and the attachments mentioned below to Beth Swain, BRCTM Scholarship Committee Chair: bswain@salem.k12.va.us
  3. You must include the following items as attachments: a letter of recommendation from a high school mathematics teacher, a letter of recommendation from a high school counselor or administrator, a copy of your most recent high school transcript, and your SAT/ACT scores.

Annual Scholarship

Each spring, the Blue Ridge Council of Teachers of Mathematics offers a scholarship in the amount of five hundred dollars ($500) to a graduating senior from a public high school in our council's service region.  The purpose of this scholarship is to support a student interested in pursuing a teaching career in mathematics.  


We will be accepting applications for the BRCTM Scholarship in early 2022.  Be sure to check back for a link to the application.
